A 40-year old Eastpointe man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for trying to meet an underage girl in Canada for sex.
U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade says Carlos Castaneda was arrested in July and charged in a scheme that involved posting an ad on the Internet seeking sex with a minor.
A special agent, posing as the father of a 15-yar old girl, agreed to meet Castaneda at a hotel in Canada after corresponding with him for several days. Castaneda was arrested by Homeland Security Investigation agents before crossing into Canada at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
According to the U.S. Attorney, this investigation was part of Operation Predator, a nationwide HSI initiative to protect children from sexual predators, including those who travel overseas for sex with minors, Internet child pornographers, criminal alien sex offenders and child sex traffickers.
Along with seven years in federal prison Castenada was also sentenced to serve ten years of supervised release.
