SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Care packages meant for needy people overseas were found dumped in the trash. Restaurant owners in Seminole County found the boxes in their dumpster.
"Everything that was probably for little kids, you could tell it was donation, charities, because it was wrapped up in rubber bands," said Marie LaCommare, of Stefano's Restaurant. "I opened it and the first thing that came to mind, who would throw things away like that in the garbage."
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that the items belonged to Community United Methodist Church in Casselberry, located about six-miles away. They said parishioners labeled and packed the items which were intended for children in Haiti.
"Girls age 2 to 5, boys 5 to 9, it was all just amazing," said LaCommare. "To see it all in the garbage, it was sad."
The Sheriff's Office said organizers at the church trusted a churchgoer to handle the shipment to Haiti, but it somehow ended up in the trash. No money was given to that person who was asked to ship the items, according to authorities.
All of the items will be returned to the church.
