Tax dollars go to Orlando restaurant porch project

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The City of Orlando is giving a popular Colombian restaurant $11,000 to help it expand.

Oh Que Bueno, at 1125 S. Semoran Blvd., plans to take the grant money and build a back porch.  Owner Alejandro Paeres says once the work is done, they plan to add five or six jobs.

"We expect to get more business and create more employment too."

Oh Que Bueno has expanded in the past, closing off its front patio area and expanding the dining there, but it did so without taxpayer money.

The commissioner for that district, Tony Ortiz, says it is worth it, adding that the project is about more than the jobs it will create.

"It's about investment," he said.  "It's about responsible investment. We're not just giving away tax dollars. What we are doing is investing a small portion in order to get a greater return."

The city is paying half of the cost of the expansion, and the restaurant will pay the rest.
