Cubs' Sveum accidentally shot by Yount on hunt

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum says he was accidentally shot in the right ear and back by former teammate Robin Yount during a recent quail hunt in Arizona.

Sveum brushed off the mishap Tuesday at the baseball winter meetings. Sveum says the pellets drew blood, but adds he was OK and didn't need stitches.

Sveum and the Hall of Famer played together in Milwaukee and are hunting partners. Sveum said he was about 50 yards ahead of Yount when a bird went up. Yount pulled the trigger, but had lost track of Sveum and hit him.

"You don't get hit very often," Sveum said. "It's not that big a deal."

Yount got the bird, plus some razzing from his friend. Sveum said he started calling him "Dick Cheney," a reference to the former vice president who once accidentally shot a friend while hunting.
