DETROIT (WJBK) -- Detroit Police have reopened six mini-stations.  Two more will open by the end of December, and five additional mini-stations will open by March 1.

Hours at the mini-stations are 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"I approached the mayor about the concept.  He thought it was a wonderful idea," says Interim Detroit Police Chief Chester Logan.

"He said we can bring it back and make it robust the way it used to be, and so I'm excited about it."

The plan is for each police mini-station to be staffed with a permanent police officer, a police reservist, as well as a volunteer from the community.

"I think it will change the whole concept and make sure that people feel comfortable with talking to the police and giving them information and that's the way that they're going to solve and help solve some of these crimes," says Mayor Dave Bing.

Though not yet equipped with the police department's CRISNet crime reporting system, officers can assist with making reports over the phone and take written reports.

The following are the locations of the mini-stations that are open or will reopen:

Six have been reopened at:

  • Belmont Shopping Center, 20500 Conant Street
  • Butzel Family Center, 7737 Kercheval Street

  • Mack & Alter, 14700 Mack Avenue
  • Virginia Park Community, 8671 Rose Parks Boulevard
  • Bel-Air Shopping Center, 95540 East Eight Mile Road

Two will open by the end of December at:

  • Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers Road
  • Rosa Parks Transit Center, 1310 Cass Avenue

Five will open by March 1, 2013 at:

  • Garden View Homes, 8571 Grandmont Street
  • Adams/Butzel Recreation Center, 10500 Lyndon Street
  • Patton Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere Street
