CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Following a foot pursuit Tuesday afternoon led by a West Side police district commander, a 19-year-old man has been charged with burglary.
About 1 p.m. Tuesday, officers from the Austin District responded to a call of burglary in progress in the 1000 block of North Leamington, a statement from police said. Officers arrived to find the suspect standing in front of the residence.
The man then ran, but Austin District Comdr. Barbara West got out of her vehicle and chased him briefly until additional responding officers converged and arrested him.
Officers found the rear door to the building and an apartment door had been forced open. The burglar had entered the apartment with several accomplices who fled with three television sets. A TV remote control was discovered in the suspect's pocket, police said.
The apartment owner said she discovered several electronics -- including Christmas gifts -- missing when she arrived home.
A neighbor positively identified Todd Baquet as one of the offenders, as well as a lookout for additional offenders. Baquet, of the 1100 block of North Leamington, was charged Tuesday with a felony count of burglary.
"It is critical for neighbors to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity especially during the busy holiday season, when offenders seek an opportune time to target victims," West said in the statement.
Baquet was scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday.
