School bus rear-ended in Kankakee County fatal crash

KANKAKEE, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -
A deadly crash took place in Kankakee County Wednesday morning, involving a school bus and another car.
Authorities said the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier struck the rear end of the bus, on Illinois Route 113 near Warner Bridge Road around 7:15 a.m.
Illinois state police public information officer Ryan Wilson said the driver of the car was killed. Aaron Ballenger, 29, of Braceville, Ill. died of his injuries on the scene.
The bus was stopped, picking up a student at the time of the collision with emergency lights activated and the stop sign arm extended.
Wilson said speed was a factor in this incident. It is not yet known if the driver was wearing a seat belt. Although he does not consider the crash site a major thoroughfare, the roadway does get busy at times.
Students from Herscher High School age on the bus, but none was seriously hurt. Parents of the injured school bus passengers were being contacted by Herscher High School representatives.
Wilson confirmed some were taken to the hospital for treatment. FOX 32 News learned they had all been released as of 11 a.m.
Citations have yet to be issued.
