Flu Cases, Patients With Symptoms Increasing In Philadelphia

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

City officials say it's not too late to get your flu shot, especially as the number of patients reporting flu-like symptoms is on its way up.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health says the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases reported during the last week of November was up significantly. And more patients are showing up at local hospital emergency departments and health clinics.

The Department of Public Health says it's administering immunizations on a walk-in basis at city health care centers through March. The cost of the vaccination is fully covered by insurance. Those without insurance will not be charged.

Centers providing immunizations are located at:

  • 1720 S. Broad St., 9–11 a.m. and 1:30-3 p.m.
  • 555 S. 43rd St., 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Monday 5–7 p.m.
  • 4400 Haverford Ave., 9–11 a.m.; 1-3 p.m.
  • 1900 N. 20th St., 9–11 a.m.
  • 301 W. Girard Ave., 8:30-11 a.m. and 1–3 p.m.
  • 131 E. Chelten Ave., 9-11:30 a.m.; 1–3 p.m.
  • 2230 Cottman Ave., 8:30-11:30 a.m.; 12:30-3 p.m.
  • Strawberry Mansion Health Care Center, 2840 W. Dauphin St., 8:30-11:00 a.m.; 1-3 p.m.

Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. People at high risk of complications of flu and those who have extensive contact with high-risk patients, including all medical and nursing home personnel, are especially urged to get immunized.

Those with the highest risk for complications from the flu are young children under 2 years of age, pregnant women, seniors over 65 years of age, and children and adults of any age who suffer from chronic diseases of a cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal or metabolic nature.
