GLOUCESTER COUNTY, N.J. -
Members of the Unified Command handling the cleanup efforts from the Paulsboro train derailment say over the last 46 hours they have not detected vinyl chloride at the site or in the Paulsboro community.
Officials provided an update on their cleanup efforts during a 4 p.m. press conference Thursday.
Beginning Wednesday at 11 a.m., officials say they began their cleanup process by pumping a product to dilute the vinyl chloride in the breached rail car.
The product and the vinyl chloride was them removed safely. Officials say no vapors escaped during the transfer process.
Officials with Unified Command say they've made "tremendous progress" in cleaning of the rail cars that derailed Friday morning over Mantua Creek.
Despite the progress, officials say they still can't give an exact time as to when evacuated residents can return to their homes. An evacuation order remains in effect through Sunday.
When residents are allowed to return, officials say they will test the air quality in the homes that were evacuated to ensure no levels of vinyl chloride are detected. Should they be detected, officials say they will ventilate the home.
The news comes after emergency officials held an information meeting for Paulsboro residents Wednesday night. Many residents at the meeting told FOX 29 they feeling they weren't able to get any questions answered in regards to the quality of the air or their safety.
Many residents say they've been confused by evacuation orders and have grown frustrated with the process.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.
The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday. That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.
By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain. It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
