Preckwinkle criticizes Emanuel, McCarthy on crime

Posted: Updated:

The president of the Cook County board has criticized Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy over the city's handling of violence in the city.

Toni Preckwinkle made the comments as she answered questions at a Union League Club of Chicago event Thursday.

She alleged Emanuel and McCarthy decided their approach to violence was, in her words, to "just arrest everybody." She added the right strategy was to put a greater emphasis on education.

Preckwinkle told reporters later that her criticism wasn't personal but aimed at society as a whole.

Emanuel's spokeswoman, Sarah Hamilton, issued a statement in response saying the mayor agrees "a holistic" approach to addressing crime is appropriate and what the city's done.

But she adds, "Let's make no mistake, criminals deserve to be arrested."
