A man is dead after a canoe carrying seven people capsized in an Orlando lake early this morning, Orlando Police said.
At 3:30 a.m., a group of men and women had taken out a large canoe on Rock Lake, near Colonial Drive and Orange Blossom Trail.
They paddled across the lake and hung out on a beach behind the Parliament House. While paddling back, someone tried to reposition on the canoe, causing the canoe to capsize, according to Orlando Police Sgt. Vince Ogburn.
Six of the boaters swam to shore, but the victim did not. One of the boaters tried to help the victim but was unsuccessful, Ogburn said.
A dive team found victim at about 5:30 a.m. about 50 to 100 feet from shore. Orlando Fire Rescue performed CPR at the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.
None were wearing life jackets, rescuers said.
Investigators are interviewing the people involved, but criminal charges are not expected.
Officials initially said four people were in the canoe but later amended the number to seven.
