TEMPE, Ariz. -

Authorities expanded their search to the area north of Tempe Marketplace after receiving new information about missing Arizona State University student, Jack Culolias.

Tempe police say a concerned resident called on Thursday night and said they had seen an object, resembling a person's silhouette, in the water north east of the area detectives and search crews examined for three days.

The resident was flying over the area at the time and didn't realize the importance of what he may have seen until he saw coverage of the story on the news.

Search crews from Tempe police, ASU police and the Maricopa County Sheriff's office decided to take another look at the Salt River basin area, but also expand to the area north of Tempe Market Place.

Sgt. Mike Pooley says there is only one way to access the area safely. Search crews must walk a mile from the access point to begin searching the area described by the caller.

He went on to say the search will be very physically demanding and expects it to take all day.

Officers tried to start searching the area after they received the resident's call but the power lines made it too difficult. They resumed searching Friday morning.

On Thursday, Tempe Police announced they had concluded their search of Tempe Town Lake without any results. Investigators wanted to shift their focus on interviewing witnesses and following up on other leads.

Authorities determined from DNA testing that a red shoe found near the lake belonged to Culolias.  So far, the shoe has been the only trace of him in the last seven days.

"It's been way too long..it's been seven days..there's no way..you don't go home, get clothes and we have class and finals next week," said Alec Katrick, one of Culolias' fraternity brothers.  "Until we know for sure, I'm still hoping."

19-year-old Culolias was last seen getting kicked out of a sorority and fraternity function at Cadillac Ranch at Tempe Marketplace on Nov. 30. He left without his wallet and cell phone.

By Friday night, Tempe police said investigators would not be returning to the river basin.

"Tempe Police are committed to finding Jack and investigating this to the fullest extent. At this time we are reaching out to the public for any information that may help in finding answers to where Jack may be," said Pooley.

If you have any information about this case, call the Tempe police.
