GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A police officer stopped a woman driving a Pontiac Grand Am at a Shop 'n' Go Mini Mart at 25th Avenue and Harrison Street whose passenger was deceased.
Officer Jeston Walker was on patrol Thursday night when he pulled the car over after seeing serious damage to the front end of the car. He noticed the female passenger was unresponsive. After asking the driver to wake her passenger, Walker attempted to rouse the passenger as well.
A child was also in the back seat of the car, but Walker said the child was unharmed.
The driver was taken to Methodist Hospitals for unknown complications.
Walker said they do not know how the vehicle was damaged.
The death remains under investigation. The Lake County Coroner's Office is expected to have a report Friday following an autopsy.
"We don't suspect that this is a homicide," Police Chief Wade Ingram said.
