An Ormond Beach police officer's wife has been arrested, accused of stealing $240,000 from six of her bank clients.
Over the past five years, investigators said former RBC Bank manager Alana Hayes, shuffled around cash, befriended clients and took their money, all to pay for a luxurious lifestyle.
According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Hayes charged thousands of dollars worth of items to her American Express credit card. Those charges included everything from clothing and jewelry to motorcycles and plastic surgery.
Hayes, 44, is the wife of Ormond Beach Police Lt. Kenny Hayes and is herself a former police officer.
Bank employees notified the FBI last year after finding clients who were missing money and investments that never happened. An FDLE and FBI investigation revealed six victims, including a blind elderly woman who said Hayes befriended her and offered to pay her utility bills. Agents said Hayes never paid those bills, but did put her name on the woman's account, and then took out a $136,000 second mortgage on the woman's home.
Agents said some of the victims are Hayes's own neighbors, who trusted her to invest money. Investigators said Hayes admitted to taking the money. She is being charged federally. No court date has been set yet.
