Search on for hit and run driver

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for help from the public after a 28-year-old bartender and assistant manager was struck and killed.  It happened in the early morning hours of Friday on Goldenrod Road, near the Lake Jasmine Apartments.  The FHP's Kim Montes said the hit and run driver was going northbound on Goldenrod.

"A white, smaller passenger vehicle was northbound and trying to make a left turn into the Jasmine Apartments here, turned in front of the scooter's path...  basically turned in front of the scooter," she said.  "This is the fifth motorcycle or scooter crash we've seen in the last week to ten days, all have been the fault of the driver."

The victim, Aaron Jones, was not at fault.  Montes said, so far, there is not much to go on other than a smaller white passenger car and that's why the public will be so important in this case.

"We've had no witnesses to this crash to come forward. we have somebody that just found the scooter and the scooter rider laying in the road, and that's why we're trying to determine exactly what happened. We believe the crash did happen at about 1:20 this morning, so if anybody saw anything, we need a phone call from them."

Montes said that this is the twentieth hit and run death in Central Florida this year, and the lack of concern is a real problem.

"People don't care. People don't care and these are family members and these are people out there, and they hit them and they leave them on the side of the road to die," she said.

Jones was the assistant manager and a popular bartender at The Other Bar, on Wall Street in Downtown Orlando.  The Other Bar General Manager Katie Johnston gathered her employees to break the news.

"Even more so than a coworker, he was just a very , very special friend, and a special human being," she said.

She's hoping the killer is caught sooner rather than later.

"I would love for them to come forth about it and be honest, and think about it if they were in Aaron's shoes, if they were in our shoes, or if they were in his family's shoes. Definitely just come forth and be honest that this is what happened and they are responsible, and to take responsibility and ownership of their actions, so that is what I would ask them, what I would request very kindly that they do."

Anyone with information about this 1:20 a.m. accident on Goldenrod Road is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477).
