Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed retired Air Force officer Thomas L. Coleman, of Lithonia, to serve as a Department of Juvenile Justice board member.
Officials say Coleman's experience in the military and public administration will serve him well in his position as a board member. Coleman earned a master's degree in public administration from Central Michigan University. Officials say Coleman earned a doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Atlanta and served four years as deputy commissioner of programs and education for the Department of Juvenile Justice.
The board is comprised of 15 members who represent the state's congressional districts. Deal appointed Coleman to represent the 4th Congressional District, which covers areas east of Atlanta including DeKalb, Rockdale and Gwinnett counties.
