Kelly Ann WaskoGILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - A Gilbert woman accused of fraudulently claiming she had cancer and getting thousands of dollars in donations has pleaded not guilty.
Maricopa County Superior Court spokeswoman Karen Arra says 41-year-old Kelly Ann Wasko entered her plea Monday and is due back in court Jan. 24 for a pretrial conference.
Gilbert police say 41-year-old Wasko is being held on a $25,000 bond on five counts of fraudulent schemes and six counts of theft.
Police say Wasko claimed she desperately needed a bone marrow transplant which her insurance wouldn't cover.
Authorities say a Facebook page was created by a family friend to collect funds to assist Wasko with the supposed medical procedure.
More than $12,000 reportedly was donated including $1,000 from Wasko's adult daughter and $350 from a person with cancer.
