An upstate New York Marine killed in Afghanistan has been buried at a veterans cemetery near his hometown.

Several hundred relatives and friends gathered for the funeral of Lance Cpl. Anthony Denier, 26, Tuesday morning at the American Legion post in Mechanicville.

A Marine honor guard presented the Purple Heart medal to his mother, Mary Morgan. One of the Marines read a letter from Denier's commander, who described him as a "natural leader" others looked to for guidance.

The service was followed by his burial at the Gerald Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

The Pentagon says Denier died Dec. 2 after he was hit by enemy fire while fighting in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

He was sent to Afghanistan in October.
