Death penalty sought in Ocoee witness murder; third suspect arrested
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Orlando police officers on Tuesday arrested third person for the murder of a witness in a deadly home invasion in September. It came on the same day that state attorneys said they would be seeking the death penalty against the prime suspect in the case.
Nesly Ciceron, 29, is charged with being a principle in the first degree, relating to the murder of Alex Zaldivar. Zaldivar, 19, was suppose to testify in a home invasion hearing, but he was killed the day before.
Investigators said three men broke into the same home where the home invasion occurred and shot the people inside, including Zaldivar. The prime suspect, Bessman Okafor, was charged with murder in September. He was indicted by the Orange County grand jury and will face the death penalty if convicted.
"Due to the cold, callous nature of this murder and the fact that it was committed to kill a witness in an upcoming trial, the State Attorney has made the decision to seek death," read a statement sent to FOX 35 by State Attorney spokesman Bernie Presha.
"I feel very good when the arrests happen," said Rafael Zaldivar, the victim's father. "But at the end of the day, I go to Alex's grave site right after this, and I go and I chat with him. It kills me what they did to him."
Investigators expect others to be arrested, even for lying and trying to cover up for the suspects.
