A Richland Hills father carved a pentagram into the back of his 6-year-old son early Wednesday, Richland Hills police said.
According to investigators, Brent Troy Bartel called 911 just after midnight and told a dispatcher what he had allegedly done.
"I shed some innocent blood," Bartel told the woman. And when asked to clarify he replied, "I inscribed a pentagram on my son."
When asked by the dispatcher why he had done so Bartel said, "It's a holy day," perhaps referring to the fact that the date was a noteworthy 12-12-12.
Officers who were dispatched to the 3700 block of Ruth Road said they found the shirtless boy with a pentagram carved into his body, covering most of his back. They said they also found a box cutter they believe Bartel used on his son.
Police arrested Bartel at the scene.
The child's mother had run to a neighbor's house, where she also called 911 to report that Bartel was hurting her son.
The boy was transported to Cook Children's Hospital for treatment.
Bartel is charged with aggravated assault of a family member with a deadly weapon and was being held in the Quad-Cities Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Child Protective Services and victim's liaison were working with the child and his mother, police said.
