An investigation has been launched after a 5-year-old was allowed to walk out of her DeKalb County school alone.
A nurse at Midway Elementary told the kindergartner that she was sick and needed to go home on Thursday morning. The girl then got her books and walked out of class to make the 2-mile trek home.
A concerned driver saw the girl walking along a busy Decatur highway.
"She was looking kind of nervous and I stopped and I pulled over," said Barbara Gendraw-Patten.
The Good Samaritan was worried about the girl's safety.
"She would have had to cross over Columbia Drive which is a very busy intersection, and at 5 years old, I don't know if this child knows red, green. "
Gendraw-Patten called police, who took the child back to Midway.
"We deeply regret that this has happened. We're going to make sure that we review the procedures with our staff," said Lillian Govus of DeKalb County Schools.
Under the proper procedure, the girl would have waited in the administrative office for her parents to get her, FOX 5's Morse Diggs reports.
