Smoke detector could have saved West Englewood woman from fire - FOX 35 News Orlando

A smoke detector which could have saved the life of a woman who died from smoke inhalation at her home in the West Englewood neighborhood Friday morning was sitting in a kitchen drawer, still in its original packaging, according to fire officials.

The fire occurred in a one and a-half story frame home at 5618 S. Paulina Ave. about 6:40 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman who apparently lived alone in the home, had drawn a bath and was found in the kitchen by firefighters, Langford said. Also in the kitchen, in a drawer, was a smoke detector, with no batteries, still in its original packaging, Langford said.

The woman apparently died of severe smoke inhalation, Langford said.

No one else was in the home with her and no other injuries were reported.

The cause and origin of the fire remained under investigation as of about 9 a.m.

Firefighters will be canvassing the neighborhood Friday afternoon passing out fire safety information and discussing fire safety with residents.
