A 7-year-old boy walked out of his school in Social Circle on Thursday, traveling nearly a mile before being spotted by a Good Samaritan. School staff didn't realize the boy was missing until police returned the child to campus.
The first grader from Social Circle Primary School left his school on his own Thursday, walking through a neighborhood and along a busy street.
Social Circle City Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd McGhee met with the child's parents and school administrators on Friday morning. The child's parents say the boy was on his own for about 20 minutes before a Good Samaritan intervened.
Dr. McGhee said the child had been back and forth between a couple of classrooms, and both teachers thought the boy was with the other teacher. McGhee said they were horrified to learn what happened, and the school is grateful for help from the Good Samaritan and police for getting him back to school.
McGhee said he is very sorry it happened, and the school is doing everything they can to make sure it never happens again.
Some parents picking up their students from the school on Friday afternoon were surprised to hear about the incident, but praised school staff and local police. They said they feel like the campus is a safe, secure learning environment for their children.
