A former west suburban police officer offered to help a woman he saw on the street, then took her to a motel and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors charged Friday.
Former Maywood officer Deon Sams, 38, of 212 Orchard in Bolingbrook was ordered held on a $200,000 by Judge Thomas Else on Friday. He is charged with one count each of criminal sexual assault and official misconduct, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.
On the morning of March 24, 2012, while patrolling in Maywood police vehicle, Sams saw the woman walking along the street, asked if she needed help and then offered to assist her, according to prosecutors.
He took her back to the station, where he returned the police vehicle and they left in his personal vehicle, a release from the state's attorney's office said. Sams then took her to a hotel, rented a room, then took her to the room and sexually assaulted her, according to prosecutors.
"My office takes any allegation of a sexual assault very seriously," State's Atty. Robert Berlin said in a statement. "What makes this case particularly disturbing is the alleged offender is a police officer.
Berlin also said the charges "are not a reflection of the fine men and women of the Maywood Police Department," which offered its "complete cooperation in this matter."
