White Christmas not out of question for Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Associated Press) -

It's been a warmer than usual holiday season so far in Illinois, but State Climatologist Jim Angel says a white Christmas is still a remote possibility.

Angel said Friday that historically, the odds of snow on Christmas range from about 20% in southern Illinois to up to 60% at the northern end of the state.

Illinois' snowiest Christmas on record was 1951. That's when Aurora had 31 inches on the ground after 12 straight days of snow.

Angel said it is unlikely Illinois will see anything close to that this year.

The statewide average temperature this month is almost 10 degrees higher than normal and most of the state has had no snow.
