Using apps for holiday travel

Posted: Updated:

If you plan to travel for Christmas and you need to get the best prices on flights, check flight status and more, there are apps for that!

AAA says this holiday travel season will be the busiest in six years for travelers so there's no better time to download these apps.

The number of travelers taking to the skies is expected to increase to about 5.6 million, according to AAA.

These apps can help you save money when booking, help navigate your trip if you run into weather delays, rebook your flight or worst-case scenario -- book a hotel room.

For comparing prices when booking a flight, download Hipmunk.  It sorts flights by price, time, layovers and chance for delays.  You can also use it for hotels.

If you're traveling to a big airport, such as Atlanta or Denver and you're unfamiliar with it, you may want to download Kayak Pro.  It offers maps of airports, helps you find your way so you don't miss a connecting flight, along with booking and tracking flights.

If you have multiple flights or traveling to different destinations during your holiday vacation, TripIt might be for you.  This app bundles all of your itineraries into one by using confirmation e-mails.

All the apps mentioned above are free, but the one that you might find the most useful is $4.99 and you're going to find that it's worth the price.  FlightTrack gives instant flight info so you'll know about delays, gate changes and cancellations instantly without having to search for the information board in an unfamiliar airport.
