Teen pleads guilty but mentally ill in central Illinois HS shooting

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Associated Press) -
A 14-year-old boy accused of firing gunshots into the ceiling of a central Illinois high school has pleaded guilty but mentally ill in a plea deal.
WJBC radio reports the teen entered the plea Monday. A teacher tackled the 14-year-old student and detained him Sept. 7 just after the teen fired a gunshot into the ceiling of a packed classroom at Normal Community High School.
The teen's plea applies to eight charges, including armed violence, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and aggravated unlawful restraint. Eight similar charges were dropped.
Defense attorney Art Feldman says sentencing ranges from probation to serving time in a detention center, both until he's 21. The boy is held at a juvenile detention center. His sentencing is Jan. 22.
