Watchdog group urges community involvement in stadium discussion

A watchdog group says the community needs to be at the table for discussions over the Atlanta Falcons' potential new stadium.
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority has approved the framework for a deal to build a $1 billion stadium downtown. A third of it would be paid for from a hotel-motel tax, and the team would pay the rest.
Common Cause Georgia recently sent letters to the Falcons and the World Congress Center to get the community involved in the decision making.
"We suggested in the letter that our watchdog organization send a representative that neighborhood groups be allowed to send representatives and that a member of the Atlanta City Council or possibly even a member of the state Senate or state House be allowed to observe negotiations going forward," said William Perry of Common Cause Georgia.
The World Congress Center Authority says the new stadium would open in 2017.
Falcons team owner Arthur Blank predicts that the project will generate thousands of jobs.
