Combat those holiday stress-makers

It may be considered the "most wonderful time of the year," but with shopping and parties and family battles, for many, it can be a time of stress and aggravation.

Crowds at the mall... a never ending to-do list... and expectations of family, friends and employers... it can bring on additional stress, which can affect both your physical and mental health.

However, doctors say a little pre-planning can help you sidestep some holiday landmines.

"If you know you tend to argue about certain topics you can choose this time not to engage in certain conversations. You can also chose to sit in a different place at the table to limit the contact with that person and if things really build up and boil to a point you can actually chose to disengage and actually end the conversation or leave the room for a while to let things cool down again," says Simon Rego, Montefiore Medical.

Another thing to realize is that the people you see over the holidays may have had a rough year.

Letting these people feel whatever they are feeling, and offering them support, may be just what the doctor ordered.

"We're social beings so there's a great buffer towards stress and enhancing of mood when you connect with people that are your loved ones or friends or family. Just be there for them and give them an ear to talk to if they want."

The best ways to calm yourself during the holiday rush: eat well, get enough sleep, and squeeze in some exercise.
