CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about sending kids back to school today.
When you said goodbye this morning or dropped them off at school, you probably took an extra moment to look at your child, and think about how much they mean to you. It would have been nice if schools were already closed for Christmas break, and we'd have a little more time before going back.
The news coverage is really hard to watch, but it's also hard to turn off. I admired state police Lt. Vance---the way he firmly but politely took command as he faced all the cameras and reporters.
We're all looking for answers, but there just isn't a simple one. A secret service study on mass murderers concluded that most people who commit those crimes don't act on the spur of the moment. They don't suddenly snap. We need to focus as much on mental illness--arguably the root of this problem--as we are on guns. Fewer than 1/3 of the 1 in 17 Americans with serious mental problems get treatment. Military assault weapons shouldn't be easier to obtain than good, affordable health care.
In time Newtown will fade from the headlines and unfortunately so will the demand for action. We move on and forget--until it happens again. How many damn times do we have to go through this until we do something?
