Hot Topic: Too little mental health care?

In the wake of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, a health care professional says too many guns are not the issue, too little mental health care is. That's according to a report on FOX News.

Dr. Keith Ablow says focusing on gun control distracts public officials from the real work that must be done, repairing a shattered mental health care system.

He says a mentally ill person with a known "propensity for violence" is likely to receive just an hour of counseling in a week by a social worker.

He cites several issues, among them the dismantling of inpatient psychiatric hospitals and changes in health coverage by insurance companies.

GOOD DAY HOT TOPIC QUESTION:  Do you think mental health issues are behind mass shootings?  Post your comments on our FOX 5 Atlanta Facebook page, or tweet us @GoodDayAtlanta.  We'll read some of your comments on the air during the 9 a.m. hour of Good Day Atlanta on Monday.

Ten time Ironman, Dave Nazaroff recently rode 900 miles on his bicycle...from Nyack, New York...to Georgia. He didn't do it to get in shape, or to win a competition; he did it to raise money for a 11 year old Callie Truelove in Gainesville, Georgia.
