SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School has ignited a conversation about corporate responsibility. Dick's Sporting Goods is credited with being the first to act.
Tuesday, the chain suspended the sales of some of its rifles nationwide and removed all of its guns from display closest to Newtown, Connecticut.
"They can switch up the gun sales all they want. The thing is we still can buy guns. We can go out there and get what we need," said Milko Saren. "I think it goes beyond what a store is going to do. I don't think that's everybody. Not everybody goes to sporting goods to buy guns. They go different places. They go a different route."
"I don't think it's the guns. It's the person, so whatever that person is putting in, they're also letting out," said Sherry Chandler.
There was mixed reaction among Michigan shoppers, but they seemed to appreciate the TV networks that downplayed violent programming over the weekend.
"I think with everything going on it's put a damper. I think the less violence right now the better," said Rebekah Rudzinskas.
"I think it helps in a way because you're not putting guns out there for people to see and stuff, but do I think that's the real problem of what happened in Connecticut? No, I do not," Saren said.
"What you watch is what you become and the more violence and the more trash that you put in, the trashier you become, and if you put good in, then you also become good," Chandler said.
Several networks postponed TV specials containing violent content. On Sunday Fox replaced new episodes of "Family Guy" and "American Dad" with repeats amid worries the shows could be disturbing to some viewers.
Paramount Studios delayed the premiere of "Jack Reacher", an action thriller starring Tom Cruise based on the Lee Child novels. The premiere was scheduled for December 15, the day after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
"Video games, entertainment, everything, everyone's being dumbed down by what's going on in Hollywood and making it look like everything is great and it's not," said Chandler.
We reached out to Dick's Sporting Goods for more information on their new gun policy. We will post their response on myFOXDetroit.com once we receive it.
