CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about bomb scares and other threats some schools around the country have been receiving since the Sandy Hook tragedy. Today, an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut was placed on lockdown and students told to stay home after unspecified threats.
It's bad enough that there's been so much misinformation and fakery on social media since last Friday's tragedy. But the phone threats and hoaxes that scare kids, teachers, and parents, cost the taxpayers untold thousands of dollars when emergency personnel are dispatched to schools.
Many law enforcement officials predicted this would happen---they investigate each incident hoping to find and prosecute those responsible.
Maybe we can help--those of us in the news media. Why even report those incidents? It only glorifies the pathetic people who are behind the hoaxes, and may give others ideas. We can't ignore important news stories that need to be reported. But we're not serving anyone when we inform you of every prank call that's scaring all of us right now.
