NY Guard drones in live-fire training at Fort Drum

Posted: Updated:

Drones operated by the New York Air National Guard will begin firing live missiles for the first time during training at Fort Drum.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports the 174th Attack Wing's MQ-9 Reaper crews will be launching the missiles this week at the firing range after training with dummy weapons since January.

The MQ-9 carries an infrared sensor, a color/monochrome daylight TV camera, an image-intensified TV camera, a laser designator and a laser illuminator.

Residents near the northern New York post may hear explosions during the afternoon and evening launches, especially during cooler evening when sound travels farther.

The 174th  was established as a fighter wing in 1947 as the first Air National Guard flying unit in New York State.  It was renamed the 174th Attack Wing in Sept. 2012 as it moved from flying piloted F-16s to unmanned drones.  It currently flies the MQ-9 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

    Zoo feeds roadkill to animals

Roadkill is part of the menu when it's feeding time at a zoo in western New York. The Seneca Park Zoo has been feeding deer carcasses to its carnivores for years. The practice began after a zoo employee hit a deer on the way to work. The zoo gets the deer after they've been hit by vehicles on Rochester-area roadways. But it won't accept deer that have been dead for more than 10 hours. The zoo also accepts deer killed by bow hunters.
