MCSO deputies collect toys to deliver to children

PHOENIX -

This month Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his deputies have been collecting toys. Thursday, they'll start giving hundreds of gifts to children in need.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is spreading holiday cheer to some of Maricopa County's smallest citizens.

The sheriff's deputies and CVS Pharmacies teamed up to gather donated toys, from baby dolls to bicycles.

Now uniformed deputies can deliver them to little ones who wouldn't have gifts otherwise.

"This is one chance to really connect with the kids under good circumstances, not bad circumstances," said Sheriff Arpaio.

The so-called world's toughest sheriff sees giving out toys as an opportunity to transform a child's future.

"Maybe the toys will save lives in the future, maybe the kids will never forget that situation where the uniformed deputy came up, treated him nice, gave him a toy. They have respect for law enforcement as they grow older and older and maybe they won't commit any crimes. I don't know I'm not a psychologist but I think every little bit helps," said Sheriff Arpaio.

People who know of families in need were also invited to get bags of toys to give out.

"They don't have a whole lot of anything, let alone food. They're on welfare so I think the kids will be really excited," said gift-giver Lee Petruso.

Known for creating controversy, the sheriff says this is one time he doesn't expect to be criticized.

"So I don't think my reputation is going to make any difference with the young kids," he said.

It certainly doesn't to one little girl, enjoying her new dolly.

Sheriff Arpaio will also attempt to get inmates in the holiday spirit. Thursday, a Christmas tree is going up and holiday tunes will be played in the Maricopa County Jail.
