Couple living in car hold out hope for jobs this Christmas

Posted: Updated:

Lots of people are happy at holiday time -- but not the family you are about to meet. They are homeless and living with their two kids in their car.

These parents of two say they are not substance abusers, but victims of a bad economy and bad luck. They've bounced around from shelters to falling-down apartments and cheap hotel rooms.

And now on the streets of Phoenix.

A beat-up 1996 Ford Aspire is home for the Allen family -- Linda, Daniel, 3-year-old Sky, and 5-year-old Malachi.

"Very cold very cold and we really need shelter terribly," says Linda Allen.

The Allens say the shelters are full -- they've checked. They can't find jobs, and they're out of options.

"You know we have people give us canned goods. We can't do anything with it. I have no address, phone number," says Daniel Allen.

So they stay in the car, which has gotten a lot colder since some criminals smashed out a window.

"I would not wish this situation on anybody I just want to have a home all I want to have my kids know that we care. It is very distressful," says Linda. "We make sure everything is done, we do everything, the only thing we are missing is a home and a job."

"I just do not know what to do what to do anymore."

Linda and Daniel Allen say the best gift they could receive this Christmas is a job. They desperately want to work.

Linda wants to work as a live-in housekeeper, or do office work. Daniel wants to work as a forklift operator, or do warehouse work, hospitality or culinary work.
