A 16-year-old girl who had been walking with her friend across a street in Scottsdale was hit and killed Wednesday.
The teens were crossing Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd just after noon in an unmarked crosswalk at Desert Cove when they were hit by a pickup truck.
They had waited to cross in the raised median, and a car in the first lane stopped for them. When the girls continued to cross, a half-ton truck in the second lane did not stop and struck them, according to Scottsdale Police Sgt. Mark Clark.
One girl suffered major head trauma and died at the hospital. The second girl was treated and released.
Both girls are students at Desert Mountain High School, according to Scottsdale Unified School District.
Investigators say it appears the driver of the truck, a 16-year-old male, did not see the victims. Speed or alcohol do not appear to be factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
