Paul Sampleton Jr., a freshman at Grayson High School, was found dead in his family townhome on Wednesday. Police said he died of a gunshot wound.
Crime scene technicians spent several hours on Thursday searching for clues inside the home. Police have not talked about a motive. They would only say there was evidence of robbery at the scene.
Classmates and friends said that Sampleton was known for selling and trading expensive basketball shoes.
"I just think it's absolutely senseless. It's just over a pair of tennis shoes? Someone's life. He's 14 years old, right before the holiday," said Shelby Gilkey, a neighbor and 2011 graduate of Grayson High School.
Grayson High was scheduled to be closed Christmas break, but the district decided to reopen it for students who wanted to talk to counselors about Paul's death.
"I feel like justice needs to be served and someone needs to pay for what they did," said Gilkey.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact Gwinnett County police at 770-513-5000.
