Superstorm Sandy

FEMA teams canvassing neighborhoods

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It may be almost two months since Superstorm Sandy hit, but FEMA representatives are still fanning out along 8th Avenue in Brooklyn.

Armed with translators, the teams are double checking to see if any businesses here still need to register with FEMA.

But in addition to checking for damage, they also want to see how the employees are doing.

"We want to find out how many days did the employee lose work because we have disaster unemployment assistance program that was available to them," said Nick Ho of FEMA.

FEMA's purpose today is actually two-fold: the agency is also letting people know that it is hiring locally. It said it has about 150 open positions.

Employed as a translator, Melissa Chan lives in Brooklyn and beyond happy to have the job she is just happy to help.

The deadline to register with FEMA for disaster assistance is January 28.
