Glaser’s Bake Shop closed due to health violations

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Health inspectors have shut down a popular century-old German bakery for having severe heath code violations at its Upper East Side location.

The bakery on First Avenue and 87th Street was closed abruptly Friday after health officials found a "severe vermin infestation" and other violations, including employees failing to wear gloves and hairnets while handling food.

Glaser's Bake Shop had previously had an "A" rating.

The 110-year-old shop will not reopen until sometime after the holidays. The abrupt closing angered some regulars, some of whom placed pastry orders for holiday cakes a while ago and now won't be able receive them in time.

Customers were surprised to hear the news of the shutdown and defended the bakery saying it is clean and haven't noticed a problem.
