CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Bears had to win, so they found a way the only way they know how: Defense.

Zack Bowman's first career fumble recovery for a touchdown got the Bears on the board. He called it an early Christmas present. It was for his team too - leading to a 28-13 much needed win.

The Bears offense struggled to get going. Jay Cutler opened the game 0 for 6 passing, failing to complete a pass until the second quarter.

"I knew it wasn't pretty," Cutler admitted after the game.

But the offense made the plays when they needed to, highlighted by a perfectly executed two minute drill to close the first half with a 21-3 lead.

The Cardinals are not good, and it was clear that would be enough for a win. But the defense sealed it with Peanut Tillman's third quarter pick six- his third of the season, the Bears 9th of the year.

All have led to victories and have been what's missing during this 1-5 stretch that has them in must win mode.

"Our play offs have already started," Lance Briggs reiterated, "Just do your part and make plays."

Julius Peppers did, recording three sacks to run his season total to 11.5 - the most he's recorded in a Bears uniform.

"It's always fun when you win", Peppers said, but he didn't care about his stats. He's more excited about the win when they couldn't afford to lose.

The biggest loss in the victory is Matt Forte, who re-injured his ankle for the third time, after rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown.

"It's not the worst I've ever felt," Forte said. "But it's the third time, so it's just getting a little aggravating."

Forte's status is unknown for next Sunday, but I suspect he'll be sleeping in his hyper-barrack chamber doing what he can to get back on the field.

Before the game, Brian Urlacher tested his hamstring on the field. Lovie Smith said the hope is that he can return next Sunday and be a big boost for the team again facing a must win game.

But they also need Green Bay to beat Minnesota. So yes, the Bears admitted they will be cheering for the Packers.

"I've always been a Green Bay fan," Lovie Smith jokingly said.

"I won't go that far," Tim Jennings said.

But they can't deny reality. They need help to make the play offs - and they still believe they will.
