Family of Gloucester Twp. Police Shooting Suspect Shocked by Crime

Gloucester Twp. -

A cousin of a Willingboro man accused of shooting three Gloucester Township police officers says the family is shocked by the crime.

"Well of course we feel bad about the officers but we‘re just going to be quiet for now because we've been told not to say anything now," she said.

"It's a sad situation all the way around."

Eddie Jones III was accused of shooting the three officers after grabbing the gun of Officer Ruth Burns once his cuffs were temporarily taken off.  It's a standard procedure whenever a suspect is brought in for finger prints and other processing.

He was picked up on charges that he stalked an ex-girlfriend Friday morning, accused of lurking around her house.   Once he was in the police station, sources say he grabbed Burns' gun and began firing.

Burns was hit in the foot.  Sergeant James Garber was hit several times in the chest, abdomen and was grazed in the head.  Authorities say a bullet proof vest saved his life, but he still required surgery.

Sergeant Kevin Thyne was also hit in the stomach when a bullet reached his utility belt.  He was grazed in the chin as well.

Thyne and Burns were hospitalized and released Friday.  Garber remained in stable condition at Cooper University Hospital.

Tuesday morning will feature another round patchy fog. It will be a mild and muggy start with temps in the mid 60s for the city and around 60 for the suburbs.  Look for more clouds than sun with highs the low 80s. There could be a few spotty showers during the day.

It may not have been the $590.5-million jackpot, but there was at least one big winning ticket sold locally for Saturday night's Powerball drawing.
