NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police say they have taken down a prodigious burglar who stole tens of thousands of pieces of jewelry and precious metals from homes across central New York over a period of years.

Police arrested John W. Suddard II, 29 of Ft. Edward, N.Y. in a large burglary case that spanned several years targeting homes in Washington, Warren, and Saratoga Counties.

They say they found 31-duffle bags containing as many as 30,000 pieces of jewelry, coins and other valuables after the arrest.  One bag of silver alone weighed approximately 100 pounds, according to police.

Suddard recently became a suspect in numerous daytime and early evening burglaries that only occurred during the winter months over the past five years.

After a surveillance sting police targeted Suddard, who was found to be in possession of jewelry and coins stolen from a home in Hudson Falls.

A search of Suddard's vehicle revealed burglar tools and a camouflage ski mask. Several duffle bags filled with jewelry and precious metals were recovered as a result of a search warrant conducted at Suddard's home and a shed in Granville.

Police are now trying to identify the owners of the thousands of stolen items.

Suddard is charged with criminal possession of stolen property and is being held at the Albany County Jail without bail.

Suddard was arrested for numerous burglaries in the 1990s and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1997. The burglaries in Washington, Warren and Saratoga Counties commenced upon his release from prison in 2007.

Anyone who believes the items may belong to them should contact Hudson Falls Police Detective Scott Gillis at 518-747-0273.
