Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Trenton recorded its first fatal shooting less than an hour into the new year.

The Times of Trenton reports  that five others were left wounded in shootings across the city in the first 14 hours of Jan. 1.

Police say the first fatality of 2013 was 54-year-old James Threadgill of Trenton. Prosecutors believe Threadgill was shot after a suspected verbal altercation with two men who tried to cut a line he was waiting on at a bar on East State Street.

Police say Threadgill was shot by one of the men outside the bar and was later taken off life support. The suspects remain at large.

Trenton recorded 24 homicides in 2012, the same number as the year before.

The first homicide of 2012 didn't occur until Jan. 15.
