Armed Guards Now At Schools In New Jersey District

Posted: Updated:
MARLBORO, N.J. -

The holiday break is over for New Jersey's public school students, and some are finding drastic changes on their campuses in the wake of last month's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Students in Marlboro were greeted by armed guards as they returned to class Wednesday.

The Marlboro School District is placing armed officers in its high school, elementary and middle school.

Local officials are calling the new safety measures preventative, but necessary, to protect the 8,000 students who attend school in the Monmouth County suburb.

Many school districts across the nation are revamping security procedures following the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Gunman Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults before taking his own life in one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation's history.

The armed officers will only be in the Marlboro schools for the next three months while the school district tries to figure out if there is a more cost-effective way to keep students safe.
