Suspicious device found near bank deemed inert

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

A suspicious device was found Wednesday outside a Chase bank in Scottsdale near 100th St. and Dynamite.

Scottsdale police say the device was taped to a table in the front entry area, an area that customers can access after-hours to use the ATM.

Bank employees noticed the item around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday prior to opening the business, according to Officer David Pubins.

The Mesa Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called to evaluate the item further while all the employees were evacuated.

About 1 p.m., explosive experts determined the device to be harmless.

Chase bank did not receive any demands in regards to the device, Officer Pubins said. It's a mystery why the device was put there.

In the past, robbers have used fake bombs to call in bomb threats as leverage to demand cash.

The investigation is ongoing, and the FBI is assisting. The bank was closed for the rest of the day and is expected to reopen Thursday.
