Minneapolis police warn of sex assault near Powderhorn Park, seek suspect

Posted: Updated:

Minneapolis police have issued a crime alert after a stranger broke into a woman's home near Powderhorn Park on New Year's Day and sexually assaulted her.

According to officials, the attacker cut the screen on an unlocked window that was covered by plastic at about 5 a.m., and used that to get into the home located near East 31st Street and 18th Avenue South.

The victim told police the man left after the assault, and said he was wearing a black letterman jacket with the New York Knick's basketball logo on it.

Police are still seeking the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to call the Minneapolis Police Department's tip line at 612-692-8477.

The assault took place just a few blocks from Powderhorn Park, where a woman was assaulted two years ago while cross-country skiing with her children. A group of teens were arrested in that case.

Just a week ago, police released preliminary citywide crime statistics for 2012. While most numbers are down, violent crime is up 7.6 percent from last year, and rape reports saw the highest increase at 12.5 percent.
