South Jersey Residents Pack FEMA Meeting On Sandy Relief

LITTLE EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. -

"Never seen anything like this before. Nothing," said Joseph Kitz.

It's been more than two months since Hurricane Sandy, and he's still looking at the devastation around his Mystic Island neighborhood in Little Egg Harbor Township.

"I don't know really anyone who has gotten any money for repairs, and they're really frustrated," he said.

Kitz is lucky his house, built six years ago, sits high. But his 90-year old mother's home next door was rushed with water.

"She lost all her furniture, clothes and appliances."

He said a nephew and friends have started doing the work to help get his mom back in her home, but she's staying with him for now. He doesn't know how much longer they can afford to do work on their own without help from FEMA.

"The money is the big thing," said Kitz.

On Friday night, hundreds of people in the same dire situation packed a meeting at Pineland High school.

One man yelled, "Where do I go to get help now?"

People came out to hear FEMA representatives update them on if and when substantially-damaged homes will get funding relief.  Many are upset to hear the time to get federal money still may be far down the road.

"Now I've got people from FEMA and adjusters telling me this could be nine months even a year," said John Armstrong, who had to move out of his home because of the damage.

Many are also worried that FEMA will soon recommend townships raise flood elevation levels for homes in order for people to continue to qualify for flood assistance money after a disaster. They could get up to $30,000 in aid but fear that won't cover all of the work and their losses.

John McNeill said, "It's going to cost me approximately $100,000 to raise the house, so it's a drop in the bucket."
