Posted: Updated:

Flu season is in full swing.  Infectious disease expert from Henry Ford Hospital Dr. Jose Vazquez stops by the Fox 2 studio to talk about ways to stay healthy.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says outpatient visits for flu-like symptoms was up more than 5.5%.

The spike happening weeks before the peaks of previous flu seasons over the past decade..

Flu season usually peaks in late January or early February.

But the CDC says by November, the flu was already severe and widespread in some parts of the south.

Currently 41 states are reporting widespread flu activity.

The CDC says the best way to fight the flu is to get vaccinated.

This year's shot is a close match to the flu strain that is circulating, and it will continue to protect you for the rest of the season, which sometimes last through March.
