Wild boars tearing up Lake County neighborhood, angry residents say

CLERMONT, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

In one Lake County city, some residents say wild hogs are going hog wild in their yards.

They say the wild boars have torn their yards up and done some serious damage, so now the people who live in the Kings Ridge community are taking action.

They've called in pro trappers to take care of the animals and stop damaging ways.  So how did this all start? When did the boars come into the neighborhood?

Residents said when someone cleared a tree filled plot of land across the lake from their property, wild boars became displaced and wound up feeding in their backyards, literally.

"Be careful. Watch this right here. Right there you can see the exposed pipe from the irrigation," said Jan Arcari.

Arcari didn't walk us through a mine field, she was took us on a tour of her backyard, or what's left of it. You see, while Santa was out delivering presents on Christmas morning, some wild boars uprooted her lawn.

At first Arcari couldn't figure out what happened in her back yard.

"They totally destroyed my back yard. I was shocked. First I couldn't believe this much damage could happen from a boar," said Arcari.

It wasn't just her grass those pesky pigs ate up, they chewed through four of her neighbors yards as well. "I didn't' hear a thing. So they're quietly destructive," said Arcari. And, those wild boars left behind thousands of dollars in damage. "As you can see right here a sprinkler head was complete exposed," said Arcari.

Arcari said while her HOA maintains her lawn, they're refusing to help out with the damage so she's left footing the bill. We asked her how she felt about that.

"Well I'm pretty upset," said Arcari. So is her neighbor Judy Labrie.

She's afraid the boar could come back and do more damage or possibly even hurt someone.

"We have people with pets, so we're afraid that anybody walking outside may encounter one of these things and they are extremely dangerous because they can be quite huge and vicious," said Labrie.

The hogs went right up to one neighbor's back door. Each and every person FOX 35 spoke with in Kings Ridge person kept saying the same thing.

"We didn't have a problem with wild boars until they cleared that area over there of all the trees so…" said Labrie.

City Council member Ray Goodgame lives in that community. He told FOX 35 that the community hired a professional trapper to try to catch the wild boars.

So, far they've gotten three of the dozen or so hogs that have been spotted roaming the community in a large pack. Several neighbors tell FOX 35 they're going to Tuesday night's commission meeting to address city leaders about the issue, hoping the city will help pay for the damage.
